~ Tourism Richmond expects an increase in visitors to the city ~
Richmond, BC, Canada (August 17, 2009) – There’s more to Richmond than most people realize, and the opening of the new Canada Line on August 17th will provide that vital link between downtown Vancouver, the Vancouver International Airport, and a growing destination that offers an abundance of hotels, shops, restaurants, attractions and festivals. Tourism Richmond expects to see an increase in the number of day trippers, staycations and overnight stays in Richmond area hotels as the city becomes much more accessible to locals and visitors. The new rapid transit service to Richmond is a key infrastructure component to support tourism in general as well as large-scale events such as the upcoming 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games and future meetings and events.
“This is a great day for tourism in Richmond as the Canada Line opening has far reaching positive impacts and presents many new opportunities. The increased accessibility will invite more locals and visitors to the city resulting in economic stimulus to every sector of the tourism industry from hotels and restaurants, to shops and attractions,” said Tracy Lakeman, Executive Director for Tourism Richmond. “The new Canada Line also supports the strategy to further position Richmond as a tourism destination. With a changing skyline and evolving product offering, we are looking forward to the future and showcasing Richmond to the world.”
As a Venue City for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, Richmond will be doing just that as a hub of Olympic activity with the O Zone celebration site in the city centre and all long track speed skating events taking place in the iconic venue, the Richmond Olympic Oval. The Canada Line will be a key service connecting everyone between Olympic events happening in Vancouver and Richmond. Beyond that, the potential surrounding the legacy of the Games comes during a critical time in Richmond’s history and Tourism Richmond has launched key destination sales and marketing initiatives to leverage the opportunity including “It’s All Here – See it, Taste it, Get it” at www.allinrichmond.com.
The growing metropolitan city of Richmond offers a diverse range of cultural, heritage, culinary and leisure experiences not to mention a plethora of festivals and the largest collection of heritage sites in the Lower Mainland. The Golden Village, a bustling commercial district in the heart of Richmond, allows visitors to experience modern China without leaving North America. Heralded as a Mecca for all things Asian, the village beckons with its Hong-Kong inspired malls, five Buddhist Temples and over 350 Asian Restaurants which offer authentic Far East cuisine. With over 90 parks and green spaces, 80 km of interconnecting hiking and biking trails, two local fruit wineries to visit and 26 international brand-name hotels to choose from, it really is all here.
"We are delighted that the Aberdeen Canada Line Station is situated across from our hotel. It will provide our guests quick and easy access to all that Richmond has to offer and another convenient way to get to and from Vancouver International Airport,” said Kathryn Warren, General Manager Radisson Vancouver Airport Hotel.
While in Richmond, the charming historic fishing village of Steveston, which is not to be missed, is accessible by bus from the Canada Line. Established in the early 1800s during the fishing cannery boom, the now picturesque village is a lively family-friendly West Coast attraction. Today, Steveston is a thriving home to the largest commercial fishing fleet in Canada and two National Historic Sites, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery and Britannia Shipyard. Must do’s include strolling fisherman’s wharf, whale watching, shopping the unique boutiques, browsing the Farmer’s and Artisan’s Market or savouring the temptations at dock side restaurants.
